KUbuntu Hardy Kde remixed on my old Vaio.

Today i’ve installed the last KUbuntu 8.04 KDE4 remixed version.
I’m really happy to have a entire KDE4 desktop.
Install the last KUbuntu give me always the same annoying troubles.. I’ve a too old Video Card (NVIDIA Geforce 420go) and my wireless usb adapter (Linksys WUSB54G v. 4.0) doesn’t have a stable driver! :(
However in a couple of hours i’ve installed kubuntu and now i’ve a working system.

  • My Linksys Wireless adapter in hardy uses the last rt2500usb module, It works but it’s too slow and it not usable! So i’ve removed network-manager (apt-get remove network-manager), and i’ve downloaded the legacy rt2570-CVS, i’ve compiled it and i’ve added rt2500usb and rt2×00usb to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, so my kubuntu will use rausb0 instead wlan0 interface by default.
  • I’m able to run any OpenGL application with the Proprietary Nvidia driver. In Gutsy i was able to compile the driver version 9631. Now in hardy we have a new kernel and this installer (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run) doesn’t work. Fortunatelly in K/Ubuntu 8.04 the nvidia-glx-legacy driver works fine with my Nvidia GeForce 420Go.

So that’s all… Kde4 is a great… but it’s not for a production machine yet!
